Vijaya Boggala Highlights a few Tips On Acrylic Painting

The popularity of acrylics has considerably gone up over the years, especially among newbie painters. Due to their low toxicity, adhesive qualities and durability, acrylic can be great for crafts, collage, and mixed media work. Vijaya Boggala mentions that earlier, most people had the notion that acrylics belong in a kindergarten classroom rather than the studio of an artist. But this concept has changed quite a bit. An increasing number of more proficient artists also like to use acrylics today. Acrylic paint is one of the most versatile mediums, and can be a perfect fit for people trying to explore painting as a hobby as well.

Using acrylics can be a great way to get started with painting as a hobby. These paints are easy to use, spread evenly, and dry quickly. Vijaya Prakash Boggala himself likes to paint with both oils and acrylics. However, according to him, acrylics can be a better choice for people who do not have much of an experience with painting. Acrylic painting is relatively simpler and a lot less frustrating too. Like any activity, people may face minor hiccups with acrylic paint when just starting out, but with proper guidance and practice, they would surely be able to ace it.

Here are a few tips underlined by Vijaya Boggala for people just starting to learn acrylic painting:

  • Find a reference: The internet is full of vibrant and interesting images that one can refer to while learning to paint. Using photo references is especially an incredible way to practice painting landscapes and urban scenes without having to venture out in public.
  • Use synthetic brushes. Acrylic paint is a medium-bodied paint. Hence, it shall adhere way better on synthetic bristle brushes, in comparison to softer brushes.  Such brushes can be easily purchased from any store selling art supplies.
  • Use wide strokes.  Vijaya Prakash Boggala mentions that one would be able to cover more areas and create better textures by using wide strokes, as opposed to thin ones. Wider strokes shall especially be ideal for painting a background, filling up a water body, or adding mountains,  and thinner ones can be used for detailing.
  • Paint densely: It is prudent not to skimp on the paint. One must use a large amount of paint and apply it thickly. People might be encouraged to use lesser paint to save money, but they should know that by doing so they would eventually have to create more layers, which can muddy the paint.
  • Work with a palette knife: It can be incredibly fun to switch things up by using a palette knife instead of a brush, and add some texture to work. Palette knives can add different textures to an artwork by either scraping paint away or adding thick layers.

Acrylic paint is known for its fast drying time. Hence, one must try to develop a quick painting habit.
